HISTORY OF PAYANARK
Payanark is the Thai name for a huge serpent which is sometimes said to breath fire in the style of a dragon, and which it is said may be single headed or may be multi headed
(one, three , five, or seven heads).
Buddhist teachings state that the Buddha meditated continuously during the final stages of his journey to enlightenment, and that during this time his resolve was repeatedly challenged by all manner of distractions and occurrences, which included relentless storms and flooding. The teachings indicate that the Buddha would have drowned or at the very least have been forced to cease meditating, and thereby might never have achieved enlightenment, were it not for the intervention of the Payanark. The Payanark is said to have lifted the Buddha clear of the raging waters on his coils without disturbing or interrupting the Buddhas meditation.
